The Drink Driving Crash Simulation

organised by Transition Year students, Matthew Hayes, Archie Mahony, Jake Kiely and Ben O'Leary in collaboration with Aidan McCarthy, Juvenile Liaison Officer, took place yesterday at the local fire station. The event was attended by students from Transition Year, 5th Year and 6th Year, as part of an effort to raise awareness about the dangers and consequences of drink driving.

The event kicked off at 11 am with a dramatic re-enactment of a car crash caused by drink driving. Three people were involved in the accident; the driver impaired by alcohol, another who was injured and had to be cut from the vehicle as well as one fatality. The emergency services, including members of the fire brigade, paramedics and gardaí responded as if it were a real accident, showcasing the intensity and urgency of such situations.  The simulation was designed not only to show the realities of a drink driving accident but also to involve students in understanding its effects. Afterwards the students were invited for a cup of tea in the fire station and had the opportunity to try on beer goggles that simulate impaired vision and use a VR headset to experience the physical and mental effects of drink driving.  Students were given the opportunity to reflect on the dangers of reckless decision-making and the devastating consequences it can have, not only for the person driving under the influence but also for innocent victims and the emergency responders who must deal with the aftermath.  Well done to Matthew, Archie, Jake and Ben for all their hard work in organising this worthwhile event.
